The winning entry in the STFC Photowalk competition

Experimental lipstick size robots, being developed through the UK's E-ELT instrumentation programme, were the subject of the winning entry in a national photography competition.

The European Extremely Large Telescope

Welcome to the UK site for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The E-ELT will be the world's largest ground-based telescope operating in the visible to infrared wavelength range. The European Southern Observatory (ESO), of which the UK is a member, leads the project and will build the telescope.

Latest News:

On 3rd March 2013, the UK Government confirmed a long-term investment of £88 million in the E-ELT. This marks a major step in this ground-breaking project and enables the UK research community and industry to take a leading role in the project. Construction of the E-ELT will start once 90% of the cost is in place.

Please see the joint BIS/STFC press release. For more information regarding the E-ELT project, please refer to the STFC fact sheet and pages at ESO.

You can find more information regarding the UK involvement in this exciting project on this page. A guide to the E-ELT for UK media is also available.
